The NHS will cut the time Hampshire patients wait for diagnosis and treatment with the ‘End waiting, change lives’ scheme.

By December 2008, patients waiting for consultant-led treatment will be seen and treated within 18 weeks of referral.

Any hospital appointments, tests and scans will happen within this 18 week limit.

Thanks to the scheme, hospitals around Hampshire will offer a more efficient service, relieving patients from their symptoms early.

A huge transformation in Romsey hospital means that patients no longer have to be transferred to Southampton for diagnosis.

The departments for minor operations, endoscopy, out-patients and X-ray are all currently being refurbished and are due to be complete by may 2008, developing the hospital into a modern and fully equipped health care centre.

The transformation means that the departments will be able to deal with a range of aesthetic procedures, therefore putting a stop to patients travelling to Southampton General Hospital to receive treatment and be diagnosed.

Local resident Charlotte Steele commented: “ the refurbishment is a really good idea. I’m an asthma sufferer and I’ve been transferred to Southampton a few times to be seen properly. Thankfully I wont have to do that once the job is done.”

Being able to make appointments, receive treatment and be diagnosed in Romsey hospital obviously saves time and money for the patients, as well as being a huge improvement in local Health care as a whole.

The out-patient department will also be extended to include extra examination and consultation rooms to ensure that patient’s privacy and dignity is kept in tact.

Ann Smith, director of operations for Hampshire Primary Care Trust told the press: “ We’re really pleased with the progress being made at Romsey, and hope local people will be pleased with their newly re-vamped hospital”.

Controversy arose yesterday over talks concerning the sensitive issue of first cousin marriges amongst the muslim community.MP Phil Woolas discussed the subject with fellow MP’s. However he was supported by prime minister Gordon Brown who commented that Mr Woolas was “only commenting in capacity as constituencey MP”. He went on to detail that matters of this nature should be adressed locally and by local members of the community.It was reported that the MP was speaking of a particular problem about first cousins marrying. Fellow MP Geoff Hoons also commented: “It is important that we look at the subject in terms of scientific expertise and the extent to which it was actually causing a problem”. It was later stressed that nobody was suggesting that this was a problem affecting or being caused by the muslim community, it is one concerning the subject of science.The PMS highlighted furthermore that the department of health are infact responsible for any issues that the government were looking at in terms of health care, science and scientific evidence surrounding the issue of first cousin marriages.The whole subject and facts on the matter is alledgedly a scientific debate, and is something for scientific experts to comment on only. Alright! Im chan, erm im from the lovely place that is Essex and Im studying English with journalism at winchester…I no NOTHING about politics so if any one could give me some info that would be great! To be honest i don’t no what kind of stuff Im supposed to be writing about and id prefer to be on facebook soooooooo………I’ll leave it there i think!
